Fuse setter for Shrapnel shells - Musée de la Grande Guerre
Fuse setter for Shrapnel shells

This fuse setter was used by the officer manning the 75 mm gun, France’s renowned and innovative field gun. It set the time between the shell leaving the muzzle and exploding. The airburst shell contained a trail of powder, the combustion time of which was calibrated to 3, 10 or 15 seconds (the duration corresponded to a distance).

The setter was used to cut the “fuse” to the right length, using its sharp needle that perforated the pre-existing holes in the base of the shell.
