Xavier Josso exhibition

Xavier Josso, a soldier and artist in the Great War

Enlisted between September 1914 and September 1919, Xavier Josso spent the First World War with a sketchbook in hand and a box of watercolours in his pack. Through his works (watercolours, drawings in ink or pencil and later linocuts) he draws an intimate and playful vision of the war which unfolds, where his comrades are the focus and where daily life takes precedence over battle scenes.

In 2013, the Great War Museum assembled an exhibition presenting the work of Xavier Josso evoking both the place of an artist during the war as well as the intimate aspects of the conflict (daily life, camaraderie) seen through the singular eyes of this sensitive personality. This exhibition was made possible due to the artist's children donating the works.

The travelling version of this exhibition also address these big themes by particularly focusing on daily life during the war. The 14 panels include high quality reproductions of the works and can be accompanied by original encased works, preservation and security conditions allowing.
